This auction is for what we believe to be a beautiful and rare antique Royal Vienna hand-painted porcelain china demitasse teacup or coffee cup. The bottom of the cup is marked with what appears to be a slanted shield. Although we are unsure, we believe the mark may be the Royal Vienna Bindenschild mark that represented the center shield of the Coat-of-Arms of the Royal Hapsburg (Habsburg) Monarchy of Austria. This slanted version of the Bindenschild mark appears to have been in use from around 1750-1790 as described in the C. Jordan Thorn’s 1947 book “Handbook of Old Pottery & Porcelain Marks“. Although there appear to be many variants of the slanted Bindenschild mark (and beyond that many others of varying shape, weight, and orientation), we did find several examples of pieces with nearly identical marks described as Royal Vienna by reputable sources. The cup is beautifully designed with floral sprays and a wonderful gilt border and rim. The cup is fairly small and stands roughly 1 9/16” in height and roughly 2 5/16” in diameter across the top. The base of the cup measures roughly 1” in diameter and it weighs roughly 1.5 oz. The cup appears to be free of any chips, cracks, or repairs, though it does exhibit wear, fading, aging, scratches, dirty and/or stained areas, worn giltm and manufacturing imperfections (see pictures). This beautiful antique hand-painted porcelain china demitasse teacup or coffee cup believed to be Royal Vienna is sure to be a nice addition to your collection. We do our best to properly describe an item, but please take a close look at the pictures to assess condition (mouse over to zoom, click to enlarge). This is one of many great items we currently have listed.
