This is an old masterpiece painting reproduction of John William Waterhouse’s painting Circe Invidiosa. It was re-created by using stone shadow craving technique, which was a traditional stone engraving technique over 1600 years in Hui-an Quanzhou. The painting is unframed. It was re-created in Octboer 2019.

Its meaning in Latin is “Jealous Circe”, which depicts Circe, polluting the water to turn Scylla, her enemy into “a hideous monster.” Circe is a goddess of magic.  In Greek mythology, she was a witch, and Scylla was a beautiful fairy who gets turned into the monster.
Invidia (envy) is one of the Seven Deadly Sins in Christian belief. Invidia is also the Roman name for the ancient Greek goddess, Nemesis.
The deep greens and blues and the echo of straight vertical lines representing the certainty of Invidia’s intention.
The Pre-Raphaelites styles were created by a group of English painters, poets, and art critics in 1848. The Pre-Raphaelites aimed at painting subjects from modern life, and writings often used historic costumes for precision. This type of painting was painted directly from nature itself, as precisely as possible, and with passionate attention to detail. The Pre-Raphaelites described themselves as reform movement, created a clear name for their arts (Circe Invidiosa, n.d.).
The painting was based on the myth of Circe, Glaucus, and Scylla in Book XIV of Metamorphoses.
