Description
Offering this rare and unusual Cast Iron Japanese Style Herb Crusher Trough and Grinding Wheel. Dating from early to mid 1900s.The trough shaped body and wheel are cast iron and the handles on the wheel are made of a hardwood. The trough is in excellent condition, with the wheel showing greater signs of wear. Both have a rough surface. The finish on the hardwood handles is somewhat faded and worn with age.
The dimensions are approximately:
Trough: 9” long, 3” wide and 2 1/4” high
Grinding Wheel: 6” wide across handles, and iron wheel is about 4” wide and 1/4” thick.
The unpackaged weight is about 4 lbs.
This is an herb grinder called yagen that was traditionally used in Japan as an apothecary mortar to crush herbs to be used for oriental medicines. It would now be useful to crush herbs, but would be an excellent addition to any collection of vintage apothecary tools.
