    Description

Walter "Hoot" Evers (1921-1991) had an excellent 12 year major league career, dispite the many injuries incurred over the years, which hampered him thoroughly through the latter stages. He served in the Army during WW II, and played for the Tigers (1941 & 1946-1952 & 1954), Red Sox (1952-1954), Giants (1954), Orioles (1955 & 1956), and Indians (1955-1956). A 2-time All-Star, Evers played in 1142 games, hitting .278, with 1055 hits, 98 HRs, and 565 RBIs. He had his best season in 1950, with a career high batting average of .323, 21 HRs, 103 RBIs, league leading 11 triples, made the All-Star team, and finished 11th in MVP. Having suffered several broken thumbs, and several beanings, his career slowed down beginning in 1951. He later coached for the Indians in 1970, and from 1970 to 1978, was Director of Player Development for the Tigers.
