    Description

Floyd "Babe" Herman (1903-1987) was one of the best hitters in baseball during his career, and also known for his poor fielding and base-running. He played 13 seasons in the majors for the Bro. Robins (1926-1931 & Dodgers (1945), Reds (1932 & 1935-1936), Cubs (1933-1934), Pirates (1935), and Tigers (1937). A left-handed hitting outfielder/1st baseman, Herman hit .324 in 1552 games, with 1818 hits, 181 HRs, and 997 RBIs. In 1929, he was 8th in MVP, while hitting .381 (2nd to Rogers Hornsby), with 217 hits, 21 HRs, and 113 RBIs. He had his best season in 1930, hitting a career high .393 (2nd to Bill Terry's .401), with career high 143 runs scored, 35 HRs, and 130 RBIs, but did not receive a single MVP vote. Herman led the N.L. in triples with 19 in 1932, and after his playing days, coached for the Pirates in 1951. It was said that Herman once doubled into a double play, and was hit in the head trying to catch a fly ball.
