Item Description:
I am pleased to offer this
original
and
old
hand-made Japanese army officers Samurai sword, or
Nihonto
, brought back from WWII. The blade represents the opportunity to own a historic
Shinto wakizashi
made by the famous swordsmith
Rai Kanemichi
, with a
Kanteisho
certification paper, and with high end Samurai mounts that include
family mons
on the handle. The blade is in
MINTY
condition and the mountings are in
Near MINT
condition. The sword has a blade length of 21.5 inches (55cm). It features a well-grained, highly visible, and finely crafted
itame
hada. The hamon is a Mishina-style
gunome midare
that is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a
maru
boshi. The hamon is expertly made with a deep
nioi guchi
,
ashi
, and
sunagashi
in and along the hamon. It is a highly refined hamon.
The tang is signed
Kiku Mon Izumi no Kami Rai Kanemichi
.
Rai Kanemichi
was a famous and celebrated line of swordsmiths that were part of the well-known
Mishina
school. They worked from the 1600s to 1800s in Yamashiro province and their swords were famous for their expert craftsmanship. They were held in high enough esteem that they were allowed to carve the
Kiku mon
on their swords. Their swords were highly sought out by samurai during the time and are still sought out by collectors today. This sword looks to be by the 3
rd
generation, working ca. 1670s. He is ranked
Chu Jo Saku
by Fujishiro. The sword comes with a Kanteisho certification attesting to it’s authenticity.
The blade comes in original Samurai mountings. They are in
Near MINT
condition.
The tsuka has a silk ito wrapping with little to no fraying. The tsuka shows a very high quality
fuchi
with family mons. The tsuba is a high quality iron
sukashi
with two accompanying seppas. The saya (scabbard) is black lacquer with a leather weathering cover. The leather cover is supple and well-aged,
retaining roughly
90-95%
of original finish.
The blade is in
MINTY
condition. There are no nicks, little to no rust, and few, if any scratches. There are no major flaws like hagire.
Given the high degree of craftsmanship displayed, kanteisho papers, reputation of the swordsmith, and outstanding condition of the blade and mounts, I
highly recommend
this sword to a collector of Japanese swords or WWII militaria.
